The National Corvette Museum
After the caves we headed another half hour south to the National Corvette museum. Jim has always been somewhat of a Corvette enthusiast so this was a stop he wanted to make. It turned out even more interesting than we expected and Jamie really enjoyed the stop, as well.
The museum opened in 1994 and along with cars from the very first design, in 1953, they had every model made along with some unique concept cars and cars owned by some very famous people. There were also some cars that had nothing to do with the Corvettes. There was a man named Ed Roth, who was a cartoonist, artist, and illustrator who got into unusual hot rod designing back in the late 1950’s and 1960’s and they had some of his designs.
Another interesting fact about the museum is in 2014 they had a sinkhole collapse in the museum. Apparently there was a cave underneath the museum that they were unaware of and it collapsed bringing 8 rare and valuable Corvettes 30′ down into the hole. Only 2 of the 8 were able to be restored and they have all of them on display. They even have a glass manhole cover for you to look down and see into the sinkhole. Of course, the floor has been restored except for being able to see into the hole they left for viewing.
