The Grand Canyon, day 1!
Saturday we left at 6am for our two day mule ride into the grand canyon. What a ride. We joined 6 other people and our guide at a meeting point where they rounded up our mules, a mix of a horse and a donkey we learned. They gave us a few pointers, like just trust your mule they’ve done this hundreds of times (great) and off we went. As you can see from some of the pics the trail is very narrow at points (especially the points that have the steepest drops into the canyon) and had very sharp turns (again, where there seems to be the steepest drops). The mules seemed to take great pleasure in having their entire head (and ours) hang over the edge during the switchbacks. Mine also seemed to enjoy looking way over the ledge when we stopped for breaks. I think I even heard him laughing as I tensed above him. We stopped about halfway down for box lunches they provided and after 6 very “relaxing” hours on a mule going downhill we finally crossed the Colorado river and made it to camp. What a welcome site. We admired our home for the night for about 30 seconds and ran to the outpost for beer. We met the rest of our group there along with some other visitors and had a great evening which included steak dinners. About 8:00 Jamie and I had had enough and went and took showers then pushed or bunk beds together and were asleep by 9.
They call this Oh Jesus curve. You can see why
