The arctic circle
Today I got this crazy bug up my butt that I wanted to drive to the arctic circle. About a 5-6 hour drive each way along questionable roads just to stand in front of a sign that says arctic circle. Hey, once in a lifetime, right? We got there early afternoon, got our picture and even a certificate, spent a half hour there and left. One cool thing was they had these birds called grey jays, relative of the blue jay I think, that would actually land on your hand and take food from it. Got some great pics of that.
On the way home we saw a car pulled over and a person laying on the ground. There was a guy and girl from France bicycling on this terrible road with no satellite phone and, of course, there’s no cell service out in the middle of nowhere. Bad move. Apparently a truck passed them opposite direction and sprayed some stones in her face and she lost control and went down. She was very upset and scared and complaining of back pain so we were afraid to move her. Someone came along with a satellite phone and called the police and we were advised to put her in a vehicle and drive her about 20 min to an airport where she’d be airlifted to Fairbanks (4-5 hours away by car but the closest hospital around). We weren’t too sure that was a good idea but we didn’t seem to have any other choice. The guy with the sat phone was going that way so he took them and another person that pulled over with a truck also going that way took their bikes. Don’t know the final outcome.
Heading home again we stopped at a little burger shack called the hotspot. Was definitely an interesting little place and the burgers were pretty good. Finally made it home early evening.
