Portland sightseeing
We arrived in Portland on Saturday and found a nice campground near downtown and right across the street from the Columbia river, which is the river that separates Washington and Oregon. We set up camp and headed downtown for a bite to eat. Well our time in Portland started off with a bang. With the election results still fresh Portland was afire with demonstrations. We saw mobs of protesters carrying signs and yelling along with numerous swat teams but didn’t see any sign of violence so we grabbed dinner and headed home. Sunday was a day of football (could my dolphins actually win 4 in a row??) and relaxation.
Monday we began our sightseeing. And a full day it was. We started with a trip down the Columbia river to see the numerous waterfalls and the Vista house. The Vista house is an observatory built in 1918 as a stopping point for travelers along the Columbia river to stop and rest and get beautiful views among the river. We stopped at two falls, Latourell falls and Multnomah falls. Okay so a little qualifier here. They list Multnomah falls as the second tallest year round falls in the states. Apparently that isn’t true. I won’t bother speculating, I’ll just say they were nice to see. We had lunch at the lodge which was very nice and hiked up to the bridge halfway up the falls.
From there we headed to the Pittock mansion. A mansion built for Henry Pittock and completed in 1914. Then on to the Rogue brewery for a couple of beers and then home.
Unfortunately we didn’t quite make it home unscathed. It was a dark and stormy night (stole that from Snoopy’s writings) and driving home the person to my left got hit by the person behind him, who proceeded to hit us. No one was hurt and he gave us his insurance info and they are taking care of it. Just an inconvenience.
Oh, and the postwoman? I couldn’t resist taking that picture. Only in Oregon
