Niagara Falls
And, of course, Friday it was on to more sightseeing. We spent the day seeing Niagara Falls and doing all the touristy things there. We had both been to Niagara Falls on the Canadian side but this was our first time on the NY side. I had always thought the Canadian side was supposed to be much better but we were pleasantly surprised. The NY side in my mind is more beautiful with parks and trails. What I didn’t know is Niagara Falls is made up of 3 different falls. Horseshoe Falls, which is the largest and most famous of the three and spans both the US and Canada. Then there is the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, both on the American side and both huge but smaller than Horseshoe Falls.
We started our day at the Top of the Falls restaurant for lunch. It offered great views of the falls.
Then we went to Cave of the Winds. This was once a cave below the Bridal Veil Falls but it collapsed years ago. They now have an elevator down to a walkway where you practically walk under the falls. Depending on how adventurous you get you can get pretty soaked and experience some very strong winds. We obviously got soaked. After that we took a ride on the Maid of the Mist. A boat ride that takes you past all three falls and right up to the base of the Horseshoe Falls. They have an upper and lower deck and again, you can get pretty soaked if you stand on the forward part of the upper deck. The videos at the end will give you a pretty good idea of the intensity of these two adventures.
From there we stopped in downtown Niagara for a beer before continuing our walk then finished off the day seeing Three Sister’s Islands which is just upriver from Horseshoe Falls then Terrapin Point which sits at the top of Horseshoe Falls. We ended up walking about 7 miles taking in all the sights.
We finished off the night with some Buffalo wings at Duff’s Famous wings. Although, not where Buffalo Wings were invented this place had the best ratings in Buffalo so we figured we’d give them a try before going to the Anchor Bar where wings were invented on another night.
