Louisville, Ky

The next day we left Tennessee and headed for Kentucky. We had a campground booked that was actually across the Ohio River from Louisville on the Indiana side because it was the closest campground to Louisville. So I guess technically, we will have completed our trip without staying in Kentucky. Can’t win ’em all. Funny thing was, as we pulled in to the campground Jim realized we had stayed here before. We searched all over the blog to find out when and then remembered we stayed here for a short overnight on our way south from Michigan to Florida in October of 2019.

We set up camp and relaxed for the evening. Because, of course, Jim had plans right away the next day. When we booked this campground we didn’t realize it at the time but we ended up here at the same time the Kentucky Derby was going on. I’m still shocked we got a campsite but the place was full with no spots empty during derby weekend. Anyway, it was somewhat of a rainy day but we ventured out to check out Churchill downs and their museum. They were offering a tour of the track and rest of the facility which we did but a few times we had to pause the tour due to heavy rain and lightning. But we got to see where the horses are kept prior to a race, how they’re paraded around a paddock for potential bettors to get a feel for how a horse is looking, and how they get out to the track. They had races going on even though the weather was crappy so we got to see how it happens in real time. Was a very interesting and informative tour and well worth dodging the weather. After the tour we had dinner at a really nice steakhouse and headed home exhausted.
