Lincoln’s birthplace and Bardstown

Lincoln’s birthplace and Bardstown

Jamie had done some research the day before and found a couple of interesting things to do on the way home from the Corvette museum. One was Abraham Lincoln’s birth home along with the home he grew up in and the other was the Old Talbott Inn, a tavern in a town called Bardstown, that’s been open since 1779. They also have a hotel upstairs that has accommodated many famous people like Abraham Lincoln and Jesse James. The Lincoln stops were closed by the time we got there so we just got glimpses of them but the Inn was definitely a worthwhile stop. We had dinner in the tavern finished off with a glass from their $80 per glass Orphan bourbon bottle. Apparently, these are bottles from barrels that were discovered after being hidden away for years. It probably wasn’t worth the price but it was fun anyway.

After dinner we were hoping to spend the night at a room above the tavern but they were booked. We did get to tour a couple of the rooms including the room Jesse James used when he was in town. One night after some heavy drinking he awoke and thought he saw movement in the room and he shot up the wall. The bullet holes still remain.

Right next door there was a jail built in 1797 and was in use until 1987 and is now converted into a bed and breakfast. Fortunately, they did have rooms available and as it turns out this was a great find. The place is decorated with a perfect mix of the original jail and nice guest rooms. The host does a great job of making you comfortable and giving you a great tour of the jail with loads of history included. We knew it included breakfast but we figured it wouldn’t be anything special but boy were we wrong. He had a gourmet meal set up for us with eggs, waffles, fruit, juices, coffee, etc. It was a perfect way to start our day.
