Learning about gold mining

Wednesday we toured an old gold dredge and learn about gold panning. The dredge is a large machine that digs up large shovels of dirt with a conveyor belt with shovels and spins it to separate the heavier gold from the water rocks and dirt. It was pretty interesting how they did that. Then we tried our hand at gold panning. A woman gave us a pan filled with dirt and showed us how to shake it and separate gold flakes from dirt and water. We ended up with a small amount each that we kept. Then we joined a bunch of people at the river to search for more. I quickly became bored. Fortunately my livelihood doesn’t really on my panning patience. There was a woman the year before that found a nugget worth many thousands of dollars.

After that we took a ride to a mountain peak that overlooks the town and from there back to town to eat before our next event, midnight golf. We decided how many chances are we gonna have to play golf at midnight and it’s one of the attractions in the area. It was way too cold for us Floridians at 55 degrees but we toughed it out and had a great time playing 9 holes. We got back around 1:30 and it was, you guessed it, still light out. This was the northern most golf course in Canada.
