Jemez Pueblo and Giggling Hot Springs

Jemez Pueblo and Giggling Hot Springs

Today we headed to Jemez Pueblo and Giggling springs. It’s about an hour or so northwest of Albuquerque. I was expecting to see one of those multi leveled adobe style homes built into a mountain but apparently a pueblo is simply a term for an Indian settlement in the Southeast US. So in this case Jemez Pueblo was simply a town where Indians lived.

But the hot springs were great. First opened in the 1800’s the original bath house still stands. They water starts out at 140 degrees but they have two regulated tubs, one cooled down to 104 and one at 107. Doesn’t sound like much of a difference but boy is it. Supposedly this hot spring has a bunch of minerals in the water that do various things for you health wise. Don’t know much about that but it was very relaxing and we really enjoyed it. They even make different types of smoothies and fraps. I, of course, had the mocha cappuccino frap. 🙂

After that we had a beer, big surprise, at a bar across the street called Los Ojos. That was an interesting place. Crowd consisted of city slickers to inebriated Indians. Definitely our kind of place, lol. Decor was really cool. The bartender suggested we continue north for a bit as the scenery was spectacular. It didn’t disappoint. Beautiful mountains and canyons. We went about 10 miles north then saw a sign for a lake state park to the west and decided to check that out. Was not very spectacular. But after going that north and west we figured we may as well keep going that direction to a small town called Cuba. It looked like it was a decent road to Cuba and from there highway all the way home. Wrong! The road to Cuba turned into a dirt road through the mountains for about 15 miles. So the hour and a half ride home took about 3 hours. But it was a beautiful ride and we saw many deer, elk and even a bunch of cows that knocked down their fence and were wandering around the road. Check out the mother milking her calf. They were right in the middle of the road, lol. I think the highest elevation we hit was about 7500′.

We finally stopped for some wings at Buffalo Wild Wings and got home about 10:00. Another long day.
