Jamie’s Birthday Week in Napa

Jamie’s Birthday Week in Napa

We both went to work on the 22nd and returned on the 25th. One day off and it was off to Napa for Jamie’s 50th birthday week! We checked in at our favorite hotel in Napa, the Best Western Elm House. I know, who would think a Best Western is the best hotel in town but this place is great. It’s more of a bed and breakfast. Tom and Connie, the owners put on an amazing breakfast each morning with all kinds of homemade pastries and fresh fruit. The rooms overall are probably only average but we have only stayed in their signature rooms, some of which are equipped with fireplaces. Our favorite is in the separate building and is an extra large room with an extra large shower and bathroom. No fireplace but we enjoy the room size and privacy. The grounds are very nicely manicured with flowers and a sitting area and hot tub.

We wasted no time heading to our favorite starting winery, Domaine Carneros. The views from their outdoor deck are spectacular and the wine is good. It’s also the first winery we ever went to in Napa with our good friends Debbie and Vinnie. We went twice with them but Vinnie passed away a year and a half ago and halted our plans to make it a tradition so that winery really holds a special place in our hearts. We saw alot of wineries but some of the more memorable ones were Jarvis and Grigch. Jarvis winery was a cave built into the mountain. It was a bit expensive but really worth it. Grigch was the first winery to beat France out in an international tasting. They went on to  continue beating France out for many years and continue to do so.

Two memorable dinners were at the Culinary Institute of America that my second cousin helped set up. She worked at the one in New York and had some contacts our here hook us up. All cooking and service are done by students, which is kind of cool. That was excellent. And for Jamie’s birthday we went to Bistro Jeanty, a French bistro. We had to go there since we met in France. That was also an excellent dinner. We also hit V. Sattui, a winery/deli that we absolutely have to go to every time we’re in Napa. They have a fantastic deli and beautiful picnic area.
