Inca trail day 4. Hike to Machu Picchu

Inca trail day 4. Hike to Machu Picchu

Today we had to get up just a tad earlier. 3am! Arghh we’re not morning people but to beat a long line of people trying to get into the site at Machu Picchu we opted for an early start. We got to the check point around 4:15 and it doesn’t open till 5:30 but by the time it did there was a very long line. Another 2 hour hike and we finally made it to Machu Picchu! It was very cloudy initially but cleared up shortly after we got there. The site was huge and amazing especially considering it was built 700 years ago from large stones that had to be carried up and down these mountains and cut and carved to fit perfectly. We spent about 3 hours there getting a tour from Luis then took a scary bus ride down a steep, winding narrow road into the town of Machu Picchu. Had lunch, parted with Luis (but not before he invited us to lunch at his home before our flight Tuesday), then caught the train back to Cusco. The train ride was great. They served drinks, quiche, and had a fashion show. Trying to sell sweaters and other stuff but it was entertaining. Made it back to the hotel for A REAL SHOWER!!!! Showered for about 15 minutes each and then it was off to the Irish pub and some dinner. Then back to the hotel to sleep in a REAL BED!!!
