Huntsville National Space Museum
On our way home we decided to stop at the National Space Museum in Huntsville, Al. I probably wouldn’t have even known about it but I remember a couple of years ago Jamie mentioning they had a space camp their and at the time our granddaughter, Cadence, was saying she wanted to be an astronaut and it turns out this is where that space camp is held. Kinda neat in that it has summer camps for kids from 9 years old and up and has had 5 current astronauts go through it’s program.
The museum has actual and replicas of our history in space from the very beginning to now. Some of the actual displays include an actual Saturn V rocket, the Apollo 16 command module that took astonauts John Young, Thomas Mattingly and Charles Duke to the moon in 1972, the actual trailer used to house astronauts after they returned to earth back in 1969 and a fragment of the Skylab that was supposed to break up on re-entry into the atmosphere but a large piece landed in Australia.
There’s also a mock up of the current space station along with a control station that shows some live views of what they are seeing from inside.
It was a very educational day and we learned allot about the history and current status of our space exploration.
