Houmas Plantation and Drive to Lafayette , La.
Wednesday we hit the road for Lafayette. I debated skipping this town but had a recommendation from someone we met along the way so decided to check it out. First stop was the Houmas plantation, just outside of New Orleans. This was one of our favorite stops. It was another sugar plantation that was originally built in the 1700’s and added onto throughout the years. It is now owned and occupied by Kevin Kelly, some cargo port service president. Anyway this plantation was in much better shape than the last one but still had the originality preserved. They had some artwork and other collections that were very impressive.
Some movies and tv shows filmed here were: Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte 1964, Longstreet TV Series 1971-72, Moon of the Wolf 1972, Mandingo 1975, A Closer Walk 1976, Big Bob Johnson and his Fantastic Speed Circus 1978. A Woman Called Moses 1979, All My Children 1981, Fletch Lives (Fletch II) 1988, Snow Wonder (Hallmark Hall of Fame) 2006, K’ville (Fox TV series, pilot and first episode) 2007, Top Chef 2009, Revenge of the Bridesmaids 2010, Love, Marriage, Wedding 2010, Wheel of Fortune 2011.
They also have 3 restaurants. We had lunch at one and the other two were for dinner services, one of them is rated one of the top 20 in the US. We considered staying the night and going to that one, being the foodies that we are, but it was closed that night. After that it was on to Lafayette.
We got there around 5 and reverted to the Walmart trailer trash we are. Parked in a Walmart, shopped for a few items, then went to a tapas restaurant that had great reviews but we were disappointed. After that we called it a night.
