Finally making it to Alaska
That was it for Dawson City so the next day we finally left Canada for Alaska. We had to take a ferry across the river with the rv which was a bit interesting. It wasn’t exactly a large ferry and we barely fit but we made it. The road from Dawson City to the border was about the same as Whitehorse to Dawson City so we were still feeling pretty good about our decision. We crossed the border uneventfully and the next 20 miles were still pretty good but after that were the worst roads I’ve taken with the rv. These were roads I’d have preferred in the jeep. All torn up with rumble strips and frost heaves and pot holes.
We finally, and carefully, got to our next destination, the town of Chicken. Another bizarre place on our journey. Apparently there were a bunch of birds in this area that looked like chickens and during the gold rush they were captured and used to feed miners all over so they named the town Chicken. Did I say town? There are two rv parks, a saloon, a couple of restaurants and a post office. That’s it. But we really needed to stop and recover from our drive and as always we made the best of it. We hit the saloon and as usual mingled with the locals and made some friends. Most of the people that live there are only there in the summer and they are mostly gold panners or highway workers. Did I say highway? Anyway we had a good time and went to bed and left Chicken in the morning.
