Devil’s Tower

Devil’s Tower

We both had to work the weekend after visiting Eric and when we got back it was time to leave Colorado and head north to meet up with our friends for the bike rally in South Dakota. On the way we stopped at Devil’s Tower in northwestern Wyoming. We had pretty much covered all we wanted to see in Wyoming and although Jamie had been there I had never seen Devil’s Tower. For those who don’t know what Devil’s Tower is, it’s a lone mountain or butte as they call them, that stands about 900’ tall all alone with no other real hills in the area. They don’t know for sure how it formed but it’s made of molten rock. It was also the main focal point in the movie Close Encounters of The Third Kind.
We found a Koa campground that was right at the base of the tower for a night and it was perfect. Arrived late afternoon and after setting up camp headed right to the tower. We drove up to the visitor center and from there took the mile or two hike around the base. It was pretty impressive. After the hike we headed back to the campground and had dinner and it was off to the movies. The campground has an outdoor theater that is set up with the tower in the background and they play the Close Encounters movie every night at dusk. We made popcorn and a big jug of white Russians and we were all set for the evening.
