Dawson City

Dawson City

Tuesday we left for Dawson city in the Yukon. Very interesting story here. First of all, we had planned on driving the rv along the southern route on the Alaskan highway past Dawson city, parking and backtracking there with the jeep because we heard the roads on the top of the world highway were very bad. But sitting at a bar, where all our best decisions are made, we met a couple that had just come over the top of the world highway and said it wasn’t that bad. So we smartly decide to abandon the safe plan and drive the rv to Dawson City. Not one of our better decisions. The first 20-30 miles were great and we were looking at each other wondering what the big deal was. Then we found out. The rest of the trip was a combination of ok road, frost heaves, gravel and dirt. But we got there and overall felt it wasn’t that bad. Little did we know it was going to go very downhill from there. But in the meantime we made it to Dawson City and what a cool little town that is. It’s an old gold mining town established during the Klondike gold rush and had been featured in many movies. It looks just like a town out of the old west. Numerous bars and restaurants and a casino are all thriving during the summer months as they were during the gold rush, but now with tourism.

That night we hit the town and discovered one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever experienced at the Sourdough saloon. Captain Stevenson, a boat captain from the Klondike era purchased some cabins only to find an old, frost bit, frozen toe in one of the cabins. Yes, you read correctly, a toe. Through God knows what kind of thought process he comes up with the brilliant idea that if he puts it in a shot and calls it the sour toe cocktail people will pay to drink it. Well who am I to criticize because we both paid 5 dollars each plus the cost of the shot to participate in this bizarre ritual. Oh, and there’s a $2500 fine if you swallow the toe. Yeah, that wasn’t gonna happen. Skip the pictures if this story alone makes you queasy, it’s pretty gross. After our “cocktail” we were obviously hungry so we asked around for the best restaurant and found a very good one. Significantly better than I thought we’d find that far north in the middle of nowhere. After dinner we hit the casino to watch a live show with singing and a can can girl act. By that point we were having fun no matter what we did but the show was pretty good.

That was all the fun we could handle so we walked home in broad daylight at midnight.
