Boquillas
We were told about a small border crossing into a small town in Mexico that you access from within Big Bend called Boquillas. That sounded adventurous and fun so today we trekked off for there.
It was definitely an adventure. You drive through the park to a tiny little border crossing that I’m not even sure why it’s there. It’s manned by two people and isn’t even a road to Mexico. It’s a narrow river crossing about 30′ wide that if you didn’t mind getting wet up to your waist you could walk across. Or for a dollar apiece a guy comes over in a row boat and picks you up. Jamie talked me into splurging for the rowboat.
From there the town, if you want to call it that, is about a half mile away. Again you can opt for the cheap airline pilot way of getting there by walking or you can ride one of the dozen or so donkeys waiting to take you there and back. This ride was a whopping $5 and again, Jamie won out.
The town itself is tiny, population no more than a couple hundred, but they have two Mexican restaurants that are reasonably nice with cold beer and food. The town is actually featured on a couple of news shows. I posted the links below if you’re bored. After eating and walking through the town we made it back in one piece and explored Big Bend a bit more before heading home.
