Finally Reporting Back

Finally Reporting Back

Once again, it’s been a long time between posts. Between both of us working alot and having miserable wifi I just haven’t been able to keep up with it. But here we are at Vandenburg AFB in Lompoc, Ca. Almost halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The campground itself is adequate. Not our best by far. The grass sites were all full so we were relegated to basically a parking lot but we had full hook up and for…

DISNEYLAND!!!

DISNEYLAND!!!

Today we went to Disneyland. Not only had Cadence never been there, neither has papa. We had a great time. She especially loved the fact that she’s now big enough to go on some of the bigger roller coasters and we all went on the runway train. She loves roller coasters and was in her glory. (So was papa). Click on the picture above to see the rest of the pictures. She loves roller coasters!

Cadence and Her New Friends

Cadence and Her New Friends

Saturday and Sunday we got together with our friends Kevin and Penny from Dallas and their twin 5 year old granddaughters. The three girls became friends immediately. We hung out at the beach, pool and had Smores at the fire pit. It was a great weekend. Click the picture above to see the rest of the pictures.

The Girls Arrive

The Girls Arrive

Saturday Jamie and Cadence arrived around noon after a very early wake-up (12:30 am California time) and a long flight. They were both ready for a nap so laid down together. Cadences’ nap was much shorter than grandma’s, lol, so papa took Cadence to the beach. We’re still breaking her in as a beach bunny so she didn’t think much of the warm sand lol. But she played with some kids and had a great time splashing in the water….

On to California. Oh, and big news!

On to California. Oh, and big news!

Sunday I hit the road for southern California. We decided to skip most of New Mexico and Arizona for two reasons. 1. We have some friends that were going there with their twin 5 year old granddaughters so we thought we’d bring cadence out to meet them and also fulfill my promise to take her to Disney for her birthday. 2. We want to hit Alaska by the middle of August so we figured hitting the northern states throughout June…

Sandia Mountain Tram

Sandia Mountain Tram

Jamie had to head to Chicago for training. She was accepted into the Flight Attendant service manager program (congratulations, honey) which basically means she’ll be the head flight attendant on all her flights. The training is a week long so I’m on my own for a while. After dropping her at the airport, Jordan (our nephew) and I went to Sandia mountain to ride the tram to the top. It was a great trip. The tram goes from 5000′ to…

Back from Hawaii

Back from Hawaii

So to make sure we hit all the states we headed to Hawaii, Kauai to be exact. Unfortunately the motor home wouldn’t make it there so we had to leave her in Albuquerque. Of course, the reality is that we do this trip every year in May. It’s a combo golf, mother’s day and anniversary trip. We had a fabulous time and fabulous weather. I surprised Jamie with a convertible mustang. Which I must say is a blast to drive….

Three Days of Blog

Three Days of Blog

Gonna sum up three days in one entry. Tuesday we went out to lunch with Jamie’s stepdad, Jim, to the Standard diner. Sue, my sister, found that one from the show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I had a burger called the Bourbon Butter Burger that is probably a heart attack waiting to happen but it was excellent. Basically a burger topped with maple bourbon compound butter. Boy was it good. After that we went to Albuquerque’s old town and listened…

Jemez Pueblo and Giggling Hot Springs

Jemez Pueblo and Giggling Hot Springs

Today we headed to Jemez Pueblo and Giggling springs. It’s about an hour or so northwest of Albuquerque. I was expecting to see one of those multi leveled adobe style homes built into a mountain but apparently a pueblo is simply a term for an Indian settlement in the Southeast US. So in this case Jemez Pueblo was simply a town where Indians lived. But the hot springs were great. First opened in the 1800’s the original bath house still…

New Mexico!!!

New Mexico!!!

On our way to Albuquerque we stopped in Truth or Consequences. For all you old folks you know the name. For you young ones it was originally a radio game show then became a tv show that ran from 1940-1988. The town was originally called Hot Springs, known for it’s……you guessed it, hot springs. But in 1950 the show’s host announced they would broadcast their 10th anniversary show from the first town willing to change it’s name to Truth or…

Texas Won’t Let Us Leave

Texas Won’t Let Us Leave

On the 21st I dropped Jamie off at the airport to go to Michigan to be with her mom while she underwent some surgery. It went well and she’s doing great. I decided I was on a roll playing golf I so went out to play again. Ended up playing 36 holes, lol. The mountain you see in the distance in the 4th picture is Guadeloupe peak, Texas’ highest peak at 8751′. Just to give you an idea of the…

A Day of Leisure

A Day of Leisure

I played golf again today while Jamie went and got her nails done. After that we went to the Cattleman’s Steakhouse, which is in the middle of nowhere but has been rated in the top ten in the US. They’ve also filmed numerous movies there like Lone Wolf McQuade, The Day After Tomorrow, Extreme Prejudice, Courage Under Fire and others. The restaurant was very good but not worthy of a top ten in the country rating in our opinions. Click…

El Paso Zoo

El Paso Zoo

Today Jim played golf while Jamie did some home stuff. After that we had some time to kill before the motorhome was ready so we went to the zoo. It was just ok. There was one highlight. As jamie will tell you no one gets shit on by birds more than me. Well it’s been a few months so I guess I was due. I hate birds. Not very many pictures since the zoo wasn’t that spectacular. Finally around 6:00…

Messilla

Messilla

Today we drove about an hour to a place called Messilla. We were told it was a must see and was where Billy the Kid was tried and sentenced to be hung. Apparently it also played a significant role in the Mexican American war. Uh, it was lame. But here are the pictures. Click the picture above to see the rest of the pictures.

On to El Paso

On to El Paso

We left Big Bend enroute to El Paso and our first real glitch of the trip. We got about 60 miles east of El Paso and the engine started sputtering and we couldn’t get above 25 mph. So we pulled over at an exit in the middle of nowhere with practically no cell service and called Good Sam, our roadside service. They sent us a “mobile repair truck”, which took an hour to get to us. I told them I…

Lajitas, Tx

Lajitas, Tx

So the genius I am lost our camera. Not the first time I’ve done that, by the way. Fortunately I’ve been keeping up with downloading the pictures onto the computer so the only ones we lost were of both of us going to Lajita’s “wild West town” where you have the chance to shoot a pistol, a rifle and a shotgun. We had a great time doing that and Jamie did great for her first time shooting a gun. But…

Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park

Today we went to Big Bend National Park. It had some beautiful and some interesting sights. Among the beautiful, of course, was the scenery but also some nice hiking trails including on part of the park where the Rio Grande was very shallow and you could walk across into Mexico and hike a trail up a large hill to a river on the other side. There was also a pool area on the Rio Grande held in by rocks, some…

Big Bend State Park

Big Bend State Park

Apparently there’s a Big Bend state park as well as the national park. We hit that Friday. The temperature topped 100 degress! Here are the pics. Mostly the same stuff but there is a movie set for some movies that were filmed here. Click the picture above to see the rest of the pictures.

Ghost Town & Sunset Horse Ride

Ghost Town & Sunset Horse Ride

Everyday this week we went riding around Big Bend half the day and other activities the other half. Rather than group the pictures by day I decided to group them by category. Especially since we took so many in Big Bend. So the dates on the pictures may not coincide with that day’s post. In fact, the pictures I have of Teralingua are during the day. A little easier to see. 🙂 Today’s pictures are of our sunset horseback ride…

Boquillas

Boquillas

We were told about a small border crossing into a small town in Mexico that you access from within Big Bend called Boquillas. That sounded adventurous and fun so today we trekked off for there. It was definitely an adventure. You drive through the park to a tiny little border crossing that I’m not even sure why it’s there. It’s manned by two people and isn’t even a road to Mexico. It’s a narrow river crossing about 30′ wide that…
