Teslin and Watson Lake

Teslin and Watson Lake

Saturday we crossed into the Yukon on the way to another nothing town called Teslin. On the way we saw another large bear at the side of the road. We also stopped in a town called Watson Lake that had a very unique park called sign park. One of the army engineers working on the Alaska highway was home sick and put up a sign to remind him of home. That was about 70 years ago and it has taken…

Liard hot springs

Liard hot springs

Friday we drove to the Liard hot springs state park where they had very nice hot springs bathing set up. Today was or first real wildlife viewing day. We saw a bear, some mountain goats, some very large bison right next to our campground, and a moose next to the hot springs. We also stopped along the way at Tetsa River Lodge, which advertised the best cinnamon buns in BC. They were pretty damn good. After dinner we walked to…

Fort Nelson

Fort Nelson

Thursday we left for Fort Nelson. Another few hours drive. Not much to that town but we found a campground with a cool little saloon in it. Stopped in for a beer and dinner and that was about it for Fort Nelson. We did have our first introduction to bad northern roads. There was a stretch of about 5 miles of torn up road that we had to go about 25 mph through. Not as bad as what was to…

Dawson Creek and the start of the Alaskan highway

Dawson Creek and the start of the Alaskan highway

Wednesday we drove about 5 hours to Dawson Creek and the beginning of the Alaska highway. It was a cool little nothing town that was established as the Canadian side of the first highway to Alaska. We walked around and checked out the visitor center and the girl at the center told us it might be interesting to drive out to the original bridge that was built for the highway. It was an old wooden bridge that was still in…

North for the Alaska highway

North for the Alaska highway

Tuesday we left for our next stop, a small town just past Jasper national park. We drove past some incredible scenery and some beautiful glaciers. They offered rides onto one of them on these huge snow trucks but the next one wasn’t for a few hours so we didn’t have time. If we had known about it in advance we probably would have done it. Stayed overnight at a koa. This was much better than our campground in Calgary but…

Banff

Banff

Jamie came in on Saturday and Sunday was mostly a down day. On Monday we drove out to the town of Banff and had a nice lunch and walked around the town. Then we took the gondola up to the peak overlooking the town. What a beautiful view. Up top there was a nice visitor’s center and an old weather station that was pretty interesting. We headed back and started getting ready for our departure heading north the next day….

Time to head north

Time to head north

The last week was spent working for both of us. I got home on the first and was gonna drive to Calgary then go back to work on the 4th then meet Jamie back in Calgary after her trip. As it turned out I got a bit of Delhi belly so called in sick for my next trip. I did have an odd thing happen crossing the Canadian border. I submitted my paperwork to be able to bring our hand…

On to Coeur d’Alene, ID

On to Coeur d’Alene, ID

Next was on to Couer de Lane, Idaho where we were parking for a week prior to heading toward Alaska. Last time we were there we missed out on playing the resort course so we weren’t gonna let that happen twice. We got there Thursday and had a tee time on Friday. What a beautiful course. This and wolf creek were my two favorites on this trip so far. From the driving range you hit balls into the water and…

Craters of the moon

Craters of the moon

The night of the 24th was spent in Arco, Id where we went to Craters of the moon national park. Basically a place with a bunch of lava rock that someone decided looks like the moon. It was ok. Very windy that day. There was a cave we went through and a huge sand hill that Jim walked to the top of and almost got blown over! Jamie went about halfway up. She’s a bit smarter than Jim. Arco was…

On to Idaho

On to Idaho

Monday we left Vegas but first stopped to have the rv serviced in preparation for our Alaska adventure. That took most of the morning so we only drove a couple hours north to a town called Mesquite, Nv. That was the town I played golf in at Wolf Creek earlier in the month. From there we drove to Lava Hot Springs, Idaho to spend the night. They had 3 pools with temperatures ranging from 100 degrees to something like 108…

Jamie’s day off while Jim plays golf

Jamie’s day off while Jim plays golf

Sunday Jamie wanted a day off so I went out and hit the links. I played at a place called Royal Links which was a culmination of famous holes throughout Great Britian. It was a very nice course made more enjoyable with all the history it represented. There were even a few holes I’d played before such as St. Andrews numbers 12, 14 & 17. The clubhouse looked like a castle right out of ancient Europe and they even had…

More Vegas

More Vegas

We got back from Hawaii on 5/18 and had/needed a down day. So Thurs and Fri were spent unpacking and doing laundry and otherwise relaxing. Then Saturday night it was time to get hopping again, lol. We went to the Stratosphere hotel and casino and went up top to experience their rooftop thrill rides. They had 3. One was a ride that hung over the side of the hotel and spun you around over the city. Neither of us are…

Cinco de mayo Vegas style plus Hoover dam

Cinco de mayo Vegas style plus Hoover dam

Friday we went to the Hoover dam and took a tour. Very impressive. Then that evening it was cinco de mayo so what better place to spend it then Freemont St. in Vegas. That place is crazy enough but cinco de mayo really brought out the kooks as you can see from the pics. We started with margaritas at an outside bar people watching then walked around. They even have a zip line that you fly over the crowds head….

Wolf Creek GC. Nevada

Wolf Creek GC. Nevada

Thursday I played golf at Wolf Creek gc in Mesquite, Nv. About an hour fifteen northeast of Vegas. It’s one of my top 100 US courses coming in at number 66 in the 2016 golf magazine ratings. What a spectacular course. The pictures don’t really do it justice. It was nestled between beautiful mountains and the course played up and down some very large hills. In fact, they tell you to be very careful and make you sign a waiver…

Side trip to NJ

Side trip to NJ

Saturday we flew up to nj to visit Brian, Winnie and of course Gigi. It was a beautiful day so we ended up taking Gigi to the boardwalk. She had a great time and even went on her first ride on the train with mom and dad. We got home and grandma fed her and she fell asleep in grandma’s arms. She slept very happily with grandma and grandpa that night. Sunday it was off to work for both of…

Off to Vegas!

Off to Vegas!

Tuesday we leave for Vegas. About halfway there we get this horrible sulfur smell in the rv. I pull over concerned something is wrong and walk all around outside looking in all the compartments but there’s no smell outside, only inside. Unable to find anything wrong we continue on and it last for about another 15 minutes or so. We had to stop at an rv dealer to have our shower door adjusted and I mention it to the guy….

Grand Canyon caverns and ghost tour

Grand Canyon caverns and ghost tour

Monday we were leaving for Vegas but had heard about some caves called the grand canyon caverns that were just under halfway there with an rv park so we decided to spend the night and check them out. They had numerous different tours from a very basic walk through along paved paths to a very intense tour climbing through narrow passages into parts of the cave many people don’t get to see. I’m sure you know which one we opted…

Grand Canyon day 2!

Grand Canyon day 2!

Woke up the next morning at for a 6:30 breakfast and back on the trail at 7 for another 6 hour ride, this time uphill. I personally found uphill to be better than down but the trail (a different one then on the way down) was still narrow with sharp switchbacks and steep drops. And my mule still enjoyed scaring me. About 12:30 we finally reached the very welcomed site of the top of the canyon. All in all a…

The Grand Canyon, day 1!

Saturday we left at 6am for our two day mule ride into the grand canyon. What a ride. We joined 6 other people and our guide at a meeting point where they rounded up our mules, a mix of a horse and a donkey we learned. They gave us a few pointers, like just trust your mule they’ve done this hundreds of times (great) and off we went. As you can see from some of the pics the trail is…

Williams and Seligman, Az

Jamie did some research in one of the books Sue and Dan gave us and found two cool little towns about an hour away on old route 66. Williams and Seligman, Arizona. So we decided to take a ride and check them out and they didn’t disappoint. They were old towns basically turned tourist trap but as you can see from the pictures they were fun little towns. We stopped for a beer at the Black Cat bar, one of…
