Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Saturday we visited the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. It was built in 1802 and at 210′, is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States and 2nd tallest in the world. For what it’s worth, the tallest in the world is in Poland and is only 3′ taller.

Over the years the beach began to recede and the lighthouse had to be moved in 1999. It took 23 days for them to move it 2,900′ inland and is considered one of the tallest masonry structures ever to be moved.

They still had the original houses for the light keeper and his staff, one being turned into a museum with some interesting artifacts. They also had a small “amphitheater” set up with seat stones bearing the names of all the light keepers throughout the years. Not to diminish it’s impressiveness but it was just another lighthouse, lol.

The rest of our time in Cape Hatteras was spent golfing and relaxing on the beach as our trip around the United States was winding down.
