On to Maine
The 24th we drove to New Hampshire to stay with Jim’s mom while Sue and Dan went on vacation for a couple weeks. We stayed there till July 11 and finally hit the road again heading for Maine. We chose a campground in Portland with plans to take a side trip up the coast during our stay.
We spent two whole days there before we hit the road in the jeep for a ride up the coast for three days. Our first overnight was in Lubec, Maine the furthest most northeastern point in the US. We took a leisurely ride up the coast with stops in some small port towns and had lunch in a town called Camden at a waterfront place.
We made it up to Lubec around dinner time and found the only place open, a waterfront restaurant called the Fisherman’s Wharf. It wasn’t anything special but we weren’t expecting much. We made it to our bed and breakfast which had nice rooms and nice views of the harbor. Canada was just a stone’s throw away and you could see the bridge to get there from our room.
The next morning we woke up at 4am to go to the Quoddy lighthouse which is the location of the first sunrise in the Continental US. To our surprise we weren’t the only ones there. We met 4 other couples with the same idea.
After our sunrise we went back to the bed and breakfast and went back to sleep for a couple more hours. We woke up around 10 and enjoyed the light breakfast they had set up. Then we walked around town, which was a very small block long, before departing for Bar Harbor. Of course, before leaving we did have to have a beer at the tiny beer garden they have in the town.
Yes, I had to ring the bell.
