Lake Placid, NY
Wednesday we took a trip down memory lane for Jim. He worked in Lake Placid during the 1980 Olympics and so we drove almost 2 hours including a ferry ride across Lake Champlain to Lake Placid.
Our first stop was the location of the bobsled events. That track had to be completely redone because bobsledding speeds have increased significantly since 1980 and sleds wouldn’t stay on the track. They also added a new lodge there for athletes and visitors.
Next we headed to lunch at a place Jamie found right on Lake Champlain. We sat outside and had a great lunch with great views.
After lunch we headed to Olympic village which was being renovated for the 2023 University games, Olympic type games held for college athletes. So unfortunately, things were torn up and we didn’t get to see some things like the arena where all skating events were held. The Olympic museum was still open but on a very small scale.
Finally, we went to the location of the Olympic ski jumping. They also have a practice facility where athletes are trained using a ramp with a landing into a pool. They had training going on so we got to see that, which was pretty cool. Then we got to go up to the top of the ski jump ramp. Oh my God was that scary looking. The taller of the 2 was almost 400′ tall. It was hard to believe how high these athletes jump from.
We stopped in Plattsburgh on the way home but other than seeing the largest freshwater beach in the US there was nothing to see there. We had dinner on the way home then remembered there was a drive in movie theater near the campground. Neither of us had been to one of those in years so we topped off a full day watching a drive in movie.
