Sunday drive to Houston and Monday

Sunday drive to Houston and Monday

Sunday we packed up and headed for Houston. One of our tires was a little low so I tried putting some air in it but we were still having problems with our tires. Again, thanks Camping World. We were fortunate enough to find a tire place at a Love’s truck stop that was open and FINALLY, our tire problem is solved. That set us back an hour or so but we made it to Houston at about 4pm. Our friends…

Saturday in Dallas

Saturday in Dallas

Friday we slept in and had a late start. We went to a small area called Grapevine. Had lunch, did some shopping, then headed to another area called the Stockyards to meet up with Ross, our friend’s son that moved from Houston to Dallas after graduating and getting a job here. Had dinner and partied like 24 year olds. Had a great time and that was our day. Click on the picture above to see the rest of the pictures….

On to Texas

On to Texas

We left Louisiana for Dallas, Tx. We stayed at Sandy Lake Rv park which was pretty nice. Day 2 started with a trip to Southfork Ranch. For those of you, like me, who never saw the show Dallas that’s the site of the famous show, Dallas. Actually most of the show was taped in Hollywood. But the way the story goes is the producers were looking for an authentic large Texas ranch for the “Ewing Ranch” and came across this…

Lafayette to Shreveport

Lafayette to Shreveport

Today we went to lunch at Billy’s Boudin and Cracklins, a place Jim found that was highly rated for it’s Boudin balls, a mix of ground pork, rice and spices fried into a batter. Gotta keep trying local stuff! We had that and the Cracklins, I can’t even describe what they were except it seemed to me it was just some fried batter and spices. And also Boudin roll ups, same as Boudin balls but shaped like an egg roll….

Houmas Plantation and Drive to Lafayette , La.

Houmas Plantation and Drive to Lafayette , La.

Wednesday we hit the road for Lafayette. I debated skipping this town but had a recommendation from someone we met along the way so decided to check it out. First stop was the Houmas plantation, just outside of New Orleans. This was one of our favorite stops. It was another sugar plantation that was originally built in the 1700’s and added onto throughout the years. It is now owned and occupied by Kevin Kelly, some cargo port service president. Anyway…

Swamp and Ghost Tours

Swamp and Ghost Tours

Tuesday we went full force as it was our last night in New Orleans and, of course, we discovered a few more items we didn’t want to miss. We started the day on an airboat swamp tour. That was a lot of fun. We rode through the swamps, saw different wildlife including bald eagles, nutria (some kind of large rat that lives in the swamps) and, of course, gators. The guide even coaxed a 5 or 6 footer to the…

Destrehan Plantation

Destrehan Plantation

Thursday was spent recovering, again. Jamie went out and got some girly stuff done and I gave our rv some downtime loving. Cleaning and minor repairs, that is. We also fulfilled our vows to stay in shape on this trip. I went to the base gym and Jamie actually found one of her dance studios right there in town that she went to. Jamie also made a great roast in the crockpot that we enjoyed for dinner. Friday it was…

Day 6 – WWII Museum

Day 6 – WWII Museum

Monday we took a down day in preparation for the big next day, Fat Tuesday. We drove around the base a little and just relaxed. Tuesday’s celebration was more of the same just on a much grander scale. There were multiple parades going on at the same time the entire day all over town. And more junk. But, again, we were swept into the spirit and had a great time. Wednesday we went to the WWII. That was a great…

Mardi Gras and Superbowl Sunday

Mardi Gras and Superbowl Sunday

Sunday we headed downtown for our first look at Mardi Gras which was in full swing and did not disappoint. The reality is it’s just a town full of drunks (present company excluded?) out having a good time and acting and dressing up crazy and a bunch of interesting looking floats throwing junk onto the hands of the junk hungry drunks. But it’s hard not to get swept up by the spirit of the celebration and we went home with…

Day 2 – Drive from Pensacola to New Orleans

Day 2 – Drive from Pensacola to New Orleans

We made it to our second campsite on Saturday, Aviation Arbor RV park on a Joint Reserve base/Naval Air Station. This is the second military site we stayed in and, again, we were pleasantly surprised. Nice wide spaces with concrete pads and full service for $20 per night. Add to that a commissary, bx, gym and $1.50 beers at the club right around the corner and what more could we ask for! The original campsite we were going to stay…

Day 1 – WE’RE OFF – DRIVE FROM JACKSONVILLE TO PENSACOLA

Day 1 – WE’RE OFF – DRIVE FROM JACKSONVILLE TO PENSACOLA

Day 1 of our adventure across America is here. Somehow we pulled it off. 4 days to clean out our place, get it ready for our new tenant and get the motorhome ready for our trip. We’re off! Our first stop on the way to New Orleans and Mardi Gras is at Pensacola Naval Air Station. Decent campground. Watched a beautiful sunset, Jamie made a great dinner, then we spent most of the evening putting things away and organizing since…

About This Blog

About This Blog

This blog is a journal of our trip across the United States as full time RVers! We started out from Jacksonville, FL on February 5, 2016 with a general idea of where we were heading but no real agenda! Seeing every state was a bucket list item of Jim’s. Fortunately he has an adventurous wife that supports his crazy ideas. When I first proposed the idea to Jamie she said 2 years seems like a long time but said she’d give…
