Boat charter through the British Virgin Islands

Boat charter through the British Virgin Islands

I’m jumping ahead because I’ve had some requests for photos from our BVI trip. Guess the rest of our rv trip isn’t exciting enough, lol.

On May 13 we left Pittsburgh to join 3 other couples for a boat charter through the British Virgin Islands. This would be our first trip on a larger private boat. We first flew to San Juan, Puerto Rico for a night to make sure we wouldn’t have any problems getting to Tortola, BVI. The entire process was a struggle due to Covid requirements and if we had known what we were in for in that regard we probably wouldn’t have gone. We had to have a Covid PCR test within 3 days of arriving in Puerto Rico and within 5 days of arriving in the BVI. So on Tuesday we went for a test. Jamie’s came back Wednesday but Jim’s never came back and we were leaving on Thursday. Thursday came and still no results for Jim so I had to pay $275 to get a rapid PCR test at Pittsburgh airport before our flight. Fortunately, the test came back before our flight and was negative.

We made it to San Juan at 1am on Thursday night and had a nice day and night there. Saturday morning we flew to Tortola and had to get another Covid test which came with a restriction that we had to quarantine on our boat until the test came back. And the testing in the BVI is nothing like the US. They ram that thing way up your nose. We all made it to the boat and spent that night at the marina. Sunday we left for one of the coves on a Peter Island that were designated quarantine areas until your Covid test came back. Monday our tests came back to us by email 7 of us were negative and one came back positive. We spent that night in a cove on Norman Island and Tuesday we had to go back to Tortola and all had to retest then we spent the night in another cove on Peter Island. Not that we could complain because the coves were beautiful and we did some wonderful snorkeling and swimming.

Finally, the Wednesday all our tests came back negative and we were cleared to do whatever we wanted. Our next stop was the island of Virgin Gorda. Ironically, we had to have a test to return to the US within 3 days of departing so while we were on Virgin Gorda we had to have another test which we did on Thursday. Fortunately, they all came back negative. But enough of Covid. We spent the night at a marina on Virgin Gorda and had a wonderful dinner at a beautiful waterfront restaurant.

Thursday it was off to the island of Anegada. We had a snorkeling/lobstering charter booked there. Our guide, Kelly, picked us up in a fairly small boat and we headed off to a spot he knew we could get some lobster. We all got in the water and searched for lobster and when we found one Kelly would dive down and capture it. That was a blast and the snorkeling there was fantastic. We went home with 6 huge lobster that Kelly cleaned and we grilled that night.

Friday we left for the Jost Van Dyke Island. There was a beautiful beach there and some great little waterfront bars and restaurants.

Saturday we hit 2 snorkeling spots on the way back to Tortola, where we spent the night in the marina before departing early morning Sunday. That night we had dinner at Pusser’s pub which is part of the Pusser’s rum franchise.

This was such an amazing trip and the boat was fantastic prompting Jim to make some calls to the Moorings to inquire about boat purchasing and chartering.
